Control nerves in a job interview.

Stress and nerves go hand in hand in a job interview. We play a lot in this personal interview and we cannot help feeling insecure, nervous and feeling that we are facing a situation that will not depend on us. Stress and nerves can give a very negative image of us and prevent us from developing our potential in the interview.

I will share with you some aspects that can help you so that you can control the part that depends on you … I will comment on 9 points to keep in mind to prepare a job interview and face those dreaded nerves:

1. Non-verbal language that you transmit you can control or improve it in your interview. You must internalize yourself in not performing certain behaviors such as: rocking the chair, the movement of hands, touching your hair or head, moving your legs, coughing, etc. At the moment you are aware that you usually perform this type of gesture in situations of stress, it already makes you control of them. Somehow we are careful not to carry them out and we send the order to our brain to control them. We must also learn to get out of these situations when they have already occurred to transform them into something natural. If you become aware of them, you will surely find a way to transform them. Over time, you will achieve control of them even though inside you are like a flan.

2. Plan what the day of your interview will be like . Making decisions about certain details related to the day of the interview can help you reduce your source of stress and anxiety.

3. Try to visualize the moment of the interview: It will help you a lot to imagine the room where you are going to be (although when the moment is different from what you have thought). Imagine that there may be more than one interviewer in the room. Think that it is a time of many questions and you should know how to get out of them.

4. Prepare your clothes the day before with something that you feel comfortable with, for example, do not wear a shirt or blouse with which you know your sweat shows or do not wear a skirt or pants with which you do not feel comfortable, It is essential that you remove reasons for concern or attention because you need to be focused at the very moment of the interview.

5. Look for information about the interviewer : if possible because you have been given the name of the person who is going to interview you, search the internet for this person (linkedin, facebook, professional resume, etc). It helps a lot to know who you are going to meet, if they are young or old, their appearance, etc.

6. Plan your diet for the day of the interview. It is a mistake to stop eating breakfast or eating because of your nerves since strange noises in the gut can visit you at the most important moment of the interview and that will stress you a lot, losing focus of attention on what is important. If, on the other new hand, you know that you can even pay back for eating, try to calculate your meal before the interview by taking something light, not flatulent and with enough sugar to pass the moment.

7. Practice what your interview could look like . In psychology we call it Role Playing, that is, it simulates a situation that could look like your future job interview. You can ask a new friend or relative for help to act as an interviewer, so you can practice on the form and behavior to take into account. If possible, record these simulations, so you can know with images the weak points in your interview and everything you could improve: posture, tone of voice, tics, non-verbal language, breathing, responses that are too confused or poorly organized, etc. All of this takes time, but like everything in life, practice will make you feel more confident.

8. Organize the time on the day of your interview .  Another very important factor is planning the time on the day of the interview. If it is in the morning, you should get up with enough time to take a good relaxing shower, dress in the outfit that you have already chosen the day before, have breakfast in advance in case something unforeseen arises such as a stain on your clothes or a button that is has fallen. If you can, take 5 minutes to sit in an armchair, breathe deeply, relax and meditate that the important day has arrived and send the order to your brain to act as you have been practicing in previous days.

9. Decree that everything will be fine . Positive Psychology tells us that each person lives and acts with intentions. These must be positive and our desired objective will go in the direction that we are decreeing. Going to an interview means that you can be selected or not and that is independent of whether things have gone well or badly. The important thing is that your interview goes as you wish and that is the only part that you can control, the rest no longer depends on you, it will depend on what the recruiters want for the required position. It is understood, right ?, positive attitude, decree your desires and internalize that you are capable of achieving it. Drop there, and the rest will come only as it has to happen.

I hope these tips will help you. Above all, a positive attitude and desire to achieve what you set out to do. All the best.
